The Great Wall of China. Beijing, China.
It felt as though the reality of what i was experiencing would sink in later in the evening while going through my pics. I think i was just over excited about my trip.
I have to say, the more rural parts of China where the wall was built is amazing. It’s like nothing i have imagined the ever so busy China to be. It’s calm and serene.
For all the days i had skipped the gym.. ha! goodness me. I knew the trek would be intense but i didn’t think it would get to the extent it did. It took me a whole week to recover from everything. The sun was dehydrating, the hills were steep, many of the stairs were literally vertically built that i could have easily done tonnes of involuntary back flips if gravity wasn’t real. I must have walked from China to Timbuktu by the time i got to the peak. Luckily, a word of advise whispered to me before embarking on my trip was to wear the most comfortable shoes i own and a loose fitting cotton T. I tell ya, that was such a life saving tip. But hey, I’m not complaining for without all those things walking the wall wouldn’t have been so surreal.
Small wonder the Great Wall of China is one of the amazing wonders of the world… it just keeps going and going and going and going! What zeal it must have taken to build it. I mean, it only took five years to complete a survey on it from which it was revealed that it stretches out to 21,197 km. Wow! It certainly was worth the visit.
-
at the foot of the hill where the main entrance is was this very strategic restaurant.. breakfast was sorted
-
then there was a bit of a hill climb
-
phew! those cable cars were sent from heaven. i could not imagine having to climb the hill all the way to the top and then having to walk the wall too
-
the ride lasted only a couple of minutes and there it was.. the Great wall
-
some of the greenery was just lovely
-
i was so happy to have reached early. i had heard that the stretch could get really busy
-
the symmetry of the wall is a little off. i guess that's part of its charm. heck, it was built eons ago so no judgements
-
scenes like these, wow!
-
not only were the viewing points good for such sights, they were my haven from the scorching sun
-
lucky the direction i was headed had the sun on my back and not on my face. turned back for a quick pic though and off i was
-
there were moments i would just stand in awe
-
there was no getting used to some of the scenes
-
but with such a long way to go, the journey had to go on
-
it was quite a day. tough yet full of bliss
-
xie xie Beijing.
