a walk to the church of the saviour on spilled blood. St.petersburg, russia

Aaaaaa, let me first start by expressing how excited I am about this blog, it’s been a long time coming. Procrastination is no longer a friend of mine. I’m tempted to start on Lupitas ‘my dreams are valid’ speech but I will stop before I get carried away.. lets get on.

I had been to Russia afew times, specifically to Moscow. But time had come and St.Petersburg was my next stop and I was excited as always about visiting a new place. The last time I was in Russia it was snowing at -15 degrees celsius, i stayed put, room service and movies were the order of my day. There was no way I was going to do -15 degrees to myself, no way. This time I knew the weather would be better and sure enough the sun was out when I landed. However, it was 5 degrees but that didn’t stop the plans I had to see around.

I enquired about what was closeby and was told of a beautiful church that was a must see. “What’s it called?” I asked, and the answer…o boy, didnt see that coming, “the church of the saviour on spilled blood.” My walk began…

  • ussr soviet café, how true the name is to the destination..i was fascinated, still am. 1st stop for a hot cuppa tea.

спасибо (pronounced as spasibo) is thankyou in Russian. picked that up on my first visit and its come in handy ever since. if only I had the patience to learn more... note to self

  • of the many rivers and canals there are in St.Petersburg, I enjoyed walking along this one the most. there were one or two people with guitars on different corners strumming to my mood

  • matryoshka dolls.. I get excited. they just keep growing and growing and growing

  • you can bet I was in awe as we were approaching

  • the church of the saviour on spilled blood. truly is eye candy, I wanted to take it home with me. spent the evening reading about its history.. interesting

  • it was cold, don't let the blue skies fool ya. having come from the tropics, I tend to wear very many layers in cold weather. sometimes i'm usually the only one in heavy jackets for miles, but clearly I wasn't the only one feeling it this time (check my back left)

  • Griboedov canal

  • the church is now a museum and for that reason I promise to take you inside on a different post later on. I wouldn't if it was a place of worship just simply out of respect

  • one thing that stands out while walking about is the wiring that fills the skies here, you just wont miss it

  • Kazan cathedral

  • for an art fanatic, this was a happy sight. almost lost track of time at these stands, but every minute was well worth it

  • rush hour snurl ups, smh! this is the one thing most cities seem to have in common

  • and as the night was checking in, temperatures were dropping real fast and dinner was calling

  • spotted en route to the hotel, wondered if they were once 'real'..

  • that one last stop of the day to add to my collection of...

  • ...fridge magnets. everyone who travels has a thing they do to remind them of their, so to say, conquests. for some its postcards, others key chains, others pins and for me..magnets.
