At the Colosseum. Rome, Italy.

This is one of the top most educative sites I have had the pleasure of visiting. The history behind the Colosseum is so bitter- sweet. To think that gladiator games actually existed and to learn in detail the reason behind which they existed, mehn! Let me briefly break it down as per my understanding.. ancient Romans believed a human sacrifice at a prominent persons funeral would appease pagan gods and ensure that the deceased was well received into the afterlife. So gladiator games at the Colosseum took part for that reason. Sadly, some gladiators were prisoners of war from ancient Roman conquests and they had no choice but to fight for their lives when pulled out into the battling arena. This was one form of entertainment that took place back then. But on a lighter note, that wasn’t the only reason the Colosseum was built, it served a source of pride for the nation as the largets most beautiful amphitheater ever built.

I can’t help but marvel at how large the structure is. Even in its ruins it still is captivating. I got the impression that ancient Romans were waaay ahead of their time. Even genius enough to invent Roman concrete which made it all possible to have the Colosseum as a historic site many years later. I bet the guy who came up with that stuff would not have imagined just how much he was used to change the world that was then and is now. Knowing that the Colosseum is a structure that lived through an earthquake thousands of years ago and yet it still stands in 2016, isn’t that impressive! Looking at pictures of what it used to be from books sold within the vicinity, pure white marble walls and floors to say the least, got me thinking that if ever there will be a time machine invented one day, ancient Rome is a place i would certainly love to visit. Until then, the creative remakes on big screen of what transpired back then will keep me entertained..after all, entertainment was the whole point of the Colosseum and everything associated with it, in’it!

  • cold and gloomy start. not my cuppa tea but i was determined

  • found a cozy little coffee shop for some much needed breakfast

  • that mug had pure liquid chocolate in it, i tell no lies. slurp

  • and a few minutes later..

  • i was at the Colosseum (the structure is regularly checked.. that's a good thing)

  • stoked

  • the vicinity was just as intriguing

  • there is so much beauty left standing in the ruins

  • the detail in the structures.. from the creases on the gowns to the facial expressions on the human carvings.. loved it

  • finally got in

  • indeed the structures left tell a story

  • some of the original work on the Colosseum still stands

  • even if in rubble, it's still there

  • parts of the pillars are still there too

  • walking through paths like these had my curiosity on overdrive

  • walked through twist and turns

  • alley after alley

  • then got to the top and soaked in the view

  • the holes in the walls are a result of extraction of the metal beams that support the concrete

  • the stolen beams were used for weaponry by thieves, so the tour guide told me

  • learnt much

  • walked away a happy girl

  • grazie mille Roma.
